Edinburgh is a great base for exploring the surrounding area.
You’re just an hour away from Falkirk, home of the famous Kelpies, the largest equine sculptures in the world, and the Falkirk Wheel, an amazing boat lift that connects the Union and the Forth and Clyde Canals.
Or head south to the Borders for medieval abbeys and the home of Sir Walter Scott.
A couple of hours from the city and you’ll be strolling around the pretty fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife, tucking into delicious fish and chips. Or head west for Crianlarich at the tip of Loch Lomond.
Head north and within three hours you’ll be at Her Majesty The Queen’s highland home, Balmoral.
Where would you go?

- potter round the cute wee shops
- visit the beautiful cathedral
- pick up some super-sized olives or an ice-cream from the gorgeous deli on the high street
- cross the Thomas Telford bridge over the River Tay
From the train station, you can also walk to The Hermitage, a stunning woodland walk - especially in autumn, or after it's been rainingHave a wee nosey at my blog

Whilst in the area I also visited the Butterfly and Insect World which was nearby. Here are some photographs:
Then pop up to Beecraigs Country Park to walk up Cockleroy.
Drive on to Torphichen and see the Preceptory and pop into the Torphichen Arms for a pint and a bite to eat. Very friendly staff.
Parking at the Flotterstone Inn, you'll follow the tarmac until you see the 'Glencourse View Walk' path begin through the first gate you arrive at (on your left, before the tarmac goes up the hill). Follow this path all the way until you can see and hear the waterfall. 10min walk max. It's well worth it for a little hidden gem, especially if you like a short walk. I recommend wellies if it has been wet recently, but the path is normally no trouble at all in trainers.

I live in Wiltshire with my kids but get back as often as I can and see my family.
I'm going to add some more East Lothian love and also suggest a visit to the historic Traprain Law and Doon Hill.
Or the wonderful Seabird Centre and take a boat trip to the Bass Rock or to the Isle of May to see some puffins.
Try a spot of cable wakeboarding at Foxlake Adventure or go in search of fairies at Archerfield Walled Garden.
East Lothian is also a foodies paradise not only for locally grown and made produce but also for eating out.
I'm an Edinburgher but the region has been a favourite day trip destination of mine for many years.
