Best way to Orkney and Shetland without a car

I am planning a trip to Orkney and Shetland

We have a return flight to Inverness, then plan to go by bus + ferry to Orkney

As we are going there in june, would anyone know if we need to book our trip in advance ?

Thank you very much for your help

Have you lookedfor buses at Megabus or even Stagecoach
To book your ferry you should click here.
June can be really busy in Scotland so I would suggest that you book as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment or inconvenience.
    Best regards
  • Hi @foxglove
If you're going in June, I would certainly book your trip in advance. It doesn't have to be too far in advance, but just to ensure a spot on the ferry and accommodation in local areas accessible by public transport if you're not renting a car.

Can I ask why you're not renting a car? We spent six weeks in Shetland, and had the best time driving around and exploring at our own pace.. It's also much cheaper than public transportation in Scotland, and not as scary with the left-hand drive with not too many people on the roads! :)

@Foxglove It is possible to explore Orkney mainland without a car but its difficult as buses outside the Kirkwall - Stromness route are far and few in between. I had to walk / hitchhike a bit to get around. If you are an avid cycler, it might behoove you to hire a bike on the island.

Can't comment on Shetland as I haven't been. Here's a writeup from my last no-car Orkney trip:
