Best places to stay in Highlands over a week?

We are driving to Scotland from London this April. In no particular order we would like to visit Oban, Islay (Talisker distillery - there is a whisky interest!), Loch Ness, Culloden, Isle of Skye, and take the 'Harry Potter' train (Mallaig <> Fort William). We have two young children (3 and 1) and would like to stay in one place for a few nights at a time.

We would appreciate any advice on the best places to stay to see the Highlands and visit the places mentioned above. I had been thinking Oban or Aviemore, or perhaps Inverness, or a combination? Or a country location would be lovely too. Thanks.
