Highland Games

My husband and I will be visiting Scotland from May 23nd to June 8th.  One of our must sees is taking up the Highland Games.  I would like to plan our trip around the games we plan on attending.  From which I've researched Blackford, Atholl, Carmunnock, Helensburgh & Lomond, Shotts, and Cornhill Highland Games are held during our trip, are there any recommendations on which to one we should attend?

    Hello @mpenney

I'm not familiar enough with these particular Highland Games to recommend one over the others. Someone else may be able to help you here but you may get a feel for what's on offer from the individual websites.

If you happen to be in the vicinity of Blair Atholl over the last weekend in May you would however have the opportunity to take in two spectacular events as the Atholl Highlanders' (The Duke of Atholl's private army) Parade takes place on the Saturday with the Games the following day. Details can be found here.

Alternatively, depending on what works best with your itinerary, you could  perhaps attend the Parade on the Saturday and pick up either the Helensburgh or Cornhill Games on Saturday 1st June.

The only one of those Games I have attended is the Atholl Highland Gathering. It is one the grounds of Blair Castle in Perthshire.
As with many other Highland Games, this is a lovely way to spend the day. The view for the arena where the events are held is good - you can either get there early for a ringside seat or place yourselves up on the bank a bit further back.

You will get to see the Atholl Highlanders march into the event to officially start the Gathering too (it's quite something).

Of course if you wanted to visit the castle on the same day. it is just a short walk up the driveway.
