Road Trip to the Outer Hebrides

For anyone out there who is considering taking the wonderful CalMac ferry to the Outer Hebrides, we've just returned from a fantastic month road trip in our motorhome.  I'm now documenting the trip in a blog and hope it gives you a flavour of the islands.

If you're thinking of doing it, I have just one piece of advice - Just do it!

    @MotorhomeAdventures We are planning our first trip to Scotland (flying into Glasgow from US this Sept) and want to rent a vehicle and visit the Outer Hebrides.  Can you tell me if our itinerary is realistic and if we have planned ferries correctly?   We are meeting another couple there. 

    Mon, Sep 17

    • Arrive Glasgow at 7am, pick up car, head to the Isle of Skye.

    ACCOMMODATIONS: three nights Skye

    -----> If you have recommendations for accomodations, dining or sites we shouldn't miss - we'd love to hear them.  We are on a budget. 



    Thur, Sep 20 

    FERRY: 9:30am Uig, Skye to 11:10am Tarbert, Isle of Harris (2 hours 45 minutes)

    • Drive north to Stornoway (1 hour) to pick up Couple 2 who arrive in Glasgow on the 19th. 

    ACCOMMODATIONS:  two nights on Lewis/Harris, one night Lochboisdale

    -----> Same as above.  If you have recommendations - we'd love to hear them!



    Sun, Sep 23 

    FERRY: 6:20am Lochboisdale, S. Uist to Mallaig (3 hours 45 min)

    • then drive through the Ardnamurchan Peninsula to Kilchoan (2 hours)

    FERRY: 3:15p Kilchoan to Tobermory, Mull (40 min)

    ACCOMMODATIONS: two nights Mull

    -----> Same as above.  



    Tues, Sep 25 

    FERRY: 9:55am Craignure, Mull to Oban, drive down to Kintyre Peninsula

    ACCOMMODATIONS:  Overnight one night somewhere in Kintyre

    -----> Same as above.  



    Wed, Sep 26

    FERRY: 1pm Kennacraig to Port Ellen/Port Askaig, Islay. (2 hours)

    ACCOM: two nights on Islay

    -----> Same as above.  


    Fri, Sep 28

    -----> - we haven't planned this day yet.  Any recommendations?

    FERRY:???? Islay to Kennacraig 

    ACCOM: one night  somewhere??? _______

    -----> We need a good route to get to Glasgow on Saturday. 


    Sat, Sep 29 - 

    Both couples arrive in Glasgow.  One couple leaves at 6:00A Sunday morning from Glasgow to head back to the US

    ACCOM: Glasgow ????


    -----> Couple 2 does not leave until Oct. 2.  

    ----->Do you have  any recommendations for Sunday, Sept 30 or Monday, Oct 1? 

    -----> Any recommendations for buy Ferry Tickets in advance while we are still in the US?


    Any guidance you can provide would be very appreciated!!
