Western base for day trips - or for doing nothing!

Hello!  From U.S. - planning 1st trip to Scotland in early May 2018.  Will spend 6 nights in London first, take train to Edinburgh for 1 or 2 nights - then off to the westside (I just had to pick -- there is too much to see) for 4-5 nights.  We are OK with driving, so may either train to Glascow and rent from there, or drive the entire route, returning car in Glascow.  Assume will take a train back to Heathrow - haven't gotten that far just yet.
Looking for a western base of operations, from which to take easy day trips and then back to same, cozy, bed at night. We will be ready to slow down and get some fresh air in one spot after running around 2 big cities.  Looking for quiet, access to nature and some sights, but also would be ideal to have a homey place in which to settle for a few days (do laundry, sleep, take in the local color).  Also looking for accommodation ideas.  Open to self-catering.  Thank you in advance and enjoying all the posts and info!  Its such a good community!
