First time to Outer Hebrides - hidden gems?

VisitScotlandAlisonVisitScotlandAlison Member, Moderator, VisitScotland Staff
I am going to Harris in October with husband, 2 grown-up children and an elderly golden retriever.  We have a lovely house at Borve booked for the week but wondered if anyone can tell us about hidden gems we might miss.  Planning to do the distillery, Callanais, Stornoway (for black pudding of course) and Rodel church.  I fancy also taking the ferry from Leverburgh to N. Uist but is it worth going just as a foot passenger or would you really need to take the car?

For anyone else planning a trip to Outer Hebrides this video might serve as some inspiration:

From island hopping to gin drinking (Isle of Harris Gin infused with locally harvested sugar help), to wild life spotting and outdoor pursuits like kayaking, surfing and cycling - there's a lot on offer! Not to mention learning about Gaelic culture and traditions like weaving Harris Tweed.
