Stirling is one of Scotland's most historic cities: the country's heritage capital, once the seat of power for Scotland's monarchs, and where the Wars of Independence were fought and won. It's hardly surprising that there are a lot of historically themed activities in the city, as well as many other fun things to do. We've compiled a small selection of some fun things to get up when visiting.
Stirling Castle - The centre of Stirling's history, the castle overlooks the city and has plenty to explore including the Great Hall, Chapel Royal, Regimental Museum, the great kitchens and tapestry studio.
The National Wallace Monument – The monument was built to commemorate the life of Sir William Wallace, and overlooks the scene of his greatest victory, the Battle of Stirling Bridge. As well as granting stunning views over Stirling and the surrounding Ochil Hills, the monument has the Hall of Arms, Hall of Heroes and the Royal Chamber.
Smith Art Gallery and Museum – This gallery was founded in 1874 with the bequest and collection of the artist Thomas Stuart Smith (1815 - 1869), and houses contemporary arts and crafts as well as more historical exhibitions. You may even bump into Cat-in-Charge,
Oswald Clingan-Smith, who has been at the Smith since 2004.
Battle of Bannockburn: Visitor Centre - Recently opened, this visitor centre offers up a new way to explore the Battle of Bannockburn through 3D technology. A chance to immerse yourself in the history of the battle and get a glimpse into what it would've been like for a soldier on the battlefield.
King's Park - For when the weather is nicer, the King's Park is a good place to explore and enjoy outdoor activities such as tennis. You can even see an interesting structure called the King's Knot, which is thought to date back as far as the 1600s.
