Best place for a long weekend out of Edinburgh in September?

Hi everyone,

It's that time of year where the holiday wanderlust has well and truly kicked in so I've hit planning mode and I'm looking for your top tips for a September holiday. My husband and I live in Edinburgh and want to get away for around 4 nights, and this is our hit list:

  • Easy bus or train route from Edinburgh (4 hours or less)
  • Location that will have enough local amenities that we can eat out for some of our meals
  • Somewhere that fulfills both our interests - nature (me) and history (my husband)
  • Bonus points if there's a brewery or gin/whisky distillery we can visit as well
Where should we go? Your suggestions are very much welcomed!

Hey @VisitScotlandAmanda for me, this one is easy, Isle of Arran (I don't know if you've been). It checks all the boxes quite handily. My wife & I had one of our favourite long weekends out in Arran last year (our experiences here). Based on my post history, you may be aware that I've seen a fair amount of Scotland. What you may not know is that when visiting Arran, I had the hair of my arm standing on end on witnessing the natural beauty, something that happens once in a blue moon. I'll stop gushing now!

I have a big list of public transport accessible places towards the bottom of our blog's Rural Scotland page (including personal favourites like Stonehaven, Perthshire, etc). And there is Glencoe of course but very infrequent transport options.
I'm Anirudh, an Indian travel blogger who has explored a lot of Scotland by public transport. My blog. Find me on Facebook | Instagram
