I live in the US but have been to Scotland more than a dozen times as my mother was born and raised in the country. However, I have never taken one of my sons who is now 18 but has life threatening allergies to nuts. He really wants to go so we are going this summer. I want him to see the Orkneys and Iona so we have plans to go there as well as all of my favorite places. I am wondering if anyone has any advice for places to avoid or general advice regarding traveling with an allergy. I plan on loading a backpack with safe food while we are in the highlands, but not sure if anyone has any info that might be helpful??
Thanks!

You will find that Scotland is well versed on food allergies!
We have labelling for packaged food. Under EU law, any prepacked food or drink sold in the UK must clearly state on the label if it contains the following ingredients: https://www.food.gov.uk/sites/default/files/top-allergy-types.pdf so you know what is safe to buy packaged.
In terms of restaurants and eating out (having issues myself) I suggest that you look for those who advertise gluten free menus - they are the best at making sure there is no cross contamination.
Try -
'can I eat there' - http://www.canieatthere.co.uk/
Hope that helps
