camping in Scotland

We are flying to Inverness in late August and were thinking about renting a camper so that we could go wherever/whenever.  Is it hard to find campsites on the spur of the moment without reserving them in advance?  We were hoping to not have to stick to a strict itinerary

  • Hi @leannemc late August is still busy up here so personally I would err on the side of caution and book in advance although you might just about get away with turning up at the last minute to some of the bigger sites. Borlum farm camp site in Drumadrochit, Big Sands at Gairloch and Sangosands in Durness spring to mind as ones where you could stand a reasonable chance of getting a spot. Might be worthwhile booking one every other day so you have a guaranteed spot and then being free and easy the rest of the time?

If you're discrete and tidy there are plenty of places where you can pull in for the night if you're not too fussed about having access to electric hookups. Generally speaking you can park up overnight in parking spaces without too much hassle, but don't use passing places to do it. I've seen a few folk in camper vans do that and it doesn't go down too well with locals!
