Most scenic route from Inverness to Cruden Bay
Hi we have very limited time in the Scotland Highlands. We will be in Inverness one night then drive to Cruden Bay. Any suggestions for a scenic route so we can see some things on the way? Thanks

Option 1: Via the coast road - Nairn, Lossiemouth, Spey Bay etc. It's a great route to take if you like seaside towns and villages and the option to go looking for dolphins and Ospreys at Spey Bay. Lossiemouth has a couple of very nice ice-cream shops (Miele's in particular) and Nairn has two beaches to choose from, East Beach in particular borders Culbin forest and you could combine a beach/forest walk without too much difficulty. Brodie Castle and Findlater Castle is along that route too and the coastline at Cullen and Portsoy is outstanding. The road is reasonably straightforward the whole way and shouldn't give you any navigational problems.

Option 2: Taking the high road via Grantown and Ballater. This takes you through the hard of Speyside and the Cairngorms. It's a great option if you want to see mountains and whisky distilleries. You've got Balmoral Castle on the way and the newly refurbed visitor centre in Ballater is an ideal spot for lunch. The driving is a little more challenging but the scenery makes it worthwhile. This is the longer of the two routes and you'd probably want the whole day to do it.
