Renting a car in Scotland

Hi! Im a 19 year old girl whos planning a trip to Scotland. I would very much like to rent a car, but it seems like none of the big rental companies are willing to do so if I am under 25 years old. Does anybody hav any experience with this?

Hi @minajorg, most car rental agencies have age restrictions, but your best bet would be to contact the rental agencies directly, as most have different rules.  Here's some more information about driving in Scotland.

What recommendations would you make for proper insurance? I'll check with my local (American) insurance company, but I'm not sure if that is adequate. Should I purchase insurance from the rental company?
  • @Donk the car hire company will have their own insurance and that’ll cover you. You don’t need to worry about taking anything out other than your normal travel insurance.

    Thanks very much, @LochNessPhotography

Do you know anything about licensing? Is an American driving license valid in the U.K. ?

I think it is, we’ve had friends from the US who’ve hired cars when they’re over here and they’ve never had any problems. It should be easy enough to check on the websites though, Enterprise and Hertz all operate in Scotland.
