Will be visiting from the US.  Any info on Stonehaven?  Worth an overnight visit?

Atleast worth a daytrip, here is my own daytrip experience. Dunnottar castle is pretty stunning and the town is very pretty. I'd overnight if it makes logistical sense (such as a Edinburgh - Stonehaven - Elgin / Inverness itinerary)

@bac, don't forget Stonehaven has the number 1 Fish & Chip shop in Scotland. The Bay is without a doubt the perfect place to stop and sit at the beach overlooking the sea with our favourite lunchtime meal.

@bac. @fishypro is spot on, the chips are great and they do really nice mashed peas which are good to dip your chips into. The view from just above the harbour is great! There are a couple of nice pubs which do local beers in the harbour and are worth checking out

I love Stonehaven!  Look out for the amazing sculptures which are dotted along the beach....they're awesome!

If you're coming in May or June, then head to RSPB Fowlsheugh south of Dunnottar Castle to see the seabirds on the cliffs.  If you're lucky, then there'll be large numbers of kittiwakes, guillemots and razorbills, plus smaller numbers of fulmars, herring gulls, shags and puffins as they return to the cliffs for the breeding season.

Stonehaven is a lovely Coastal town 17.7 miles from Aberdeen.
It has a nice beach . It also has an outdoor Swimming pool that is open in the summer season. The ruined Dunnottar Castle lies 2 miles south of Stonehaven which is worth a visit as there's lovely views over the North Sea. Further down the coast is the RSPB Fowlsheugh bird sanctuary.
On hogmanay  Stonehaven hosts the famous Fireballs Ceremony.
